Sonographer Job Description

Wellton AZ ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Wellton AZ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Wellton AZ ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Wellton AZ hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Arizona or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

Wellton AZ student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Wellton AZ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Wellton home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography school you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Wellton AZ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Wellton AZ area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Wellton AZ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Wellton AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Wellton healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Wellton AZ residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Wellton AZ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
