Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Arkadelphia AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Arkadelphia AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Arkadelphia AR ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Arkadelphia AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

Arkadelphia AR student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Arkadelphia AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Arkadelphia home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Arkadelphia AR ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Arkadelphia AR area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Arkadelphia AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Arkadelphia AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Arkadelphia medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Arkadelphia AR residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Arkadelphia AR area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Arkadelphia, Arkansas

Arkadelphia is a city in Clark County, Arkansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,714.[3] The city is the county seat of Clark County.[4] It is situated at the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. Two universities, Henderson State University and Ouachita Baptist University, are located there. Arkadelphia was incorporated in 1857.

The site was settled in about 1809 by John Hemphill, operator of a nearby salt works, Arkansas's first industry. It was known as Blakelytown until 1839, when the settlement adopted the name Arkadelphia. Origin of the name "Arkadelphia" is uncertain. One possibility is that it was formed by combining Ark- from the state's name Arkansas and adelphia from the Greek meaning "brother/place".[5]

Another explanation of the name is a combination of "adelphia" for place and "arc."[citation needed] Arkadelphia was once known as the "City of Rainbows", perhaps because the humid climate often resulted in rain.[citation needed]
