Sonogram Tech Job Description

Cave City AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Cave City AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Cave City AR ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Cave City AR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Cave City AR student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Cave City AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Cave City home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Cave City AR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Cave City AR area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Cave City AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Cave City AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Cave City healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Cave City AR home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cave City AR area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
