Farmington AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Farmington AR clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

Farmington AR student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Farmington AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Farmington home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Farmington AR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Farmington AR area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Farmington AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Farmington AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Farmington health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Farmington AR residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Farmington AR area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Farmington, Arkansas

Farmington is a city in Washington County, Arkansas, United States. The community is nestled in a valley among the Boston Mountains, a subset of the Ozark Mountains. Although the first settlers came from the Deep South in 1828, the community did not incorporate until 1946. Located immediately west of Fayetteville in the Northwest Arkansas metropolitan statistical area, Farmington has been experiencing a population boom in recent years, as indicated by a 66% growth in population between the 2000 and 2010 censuses.[2] It has been characterized as a bedroom community by the University of Arkansas Community Design Center.[5]

The first settlers came from the Deep South in 1828, and the area was known as Engel's Mill until a post office was built in 1868 and the village was renamed. The Civil War had a great impact on the community, as the area were mainly Confederates. The Battle of Prairie Grove occurred not far from Farmington, and the city was subject to raids by both armies as well as unaffiliated guerrillas and roughnecks.

Around the 1890s, residents found prosperity by growing strawberries and grapes and shipping them on the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway. The tracks were pulled up during World War II, something the company had wanted to do for years, under the guise of the war effort. Farmington was incorporated on October 15, 1946.[7]
