Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Stamps AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Stamps AR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Stamps AR ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Stamps AR clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

Stamps AR student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Stamps AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Stamps home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

What to ask Stamps AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Stamps AR area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Stamps AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Stamps AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Stamps healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Stamps AR residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Stamps AR area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
