Sonographer Occupation Summary

Yellville AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Yellville AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Yellville AR ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Yellville AR hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

Yellville AR student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Yellville AR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Yellville home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Yellville AR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Yellville AR area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Yellville AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Yellville AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Yellville health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Yellville AR home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Yellville AR area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Yellville, Arkansas

Yellville is a city and county seat in Marion County, Arkansas, United States.[4] Yellville is located in the Ozark Mountains along the banks of Crooked Creek, and neighbors the small town of Summit to the north. The population was 1,204 at the 2010 Census. The town's original name is preserved in the Shawnee Town Branch, a local creek. The town also holds an annual Turkey Trot Festival.

Yellville is named after Archibald Yell, who was the first member of the United States House of Representatives from Arkansas and the second Governor of Arkansas.[5] He was killed at the Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican–American War. Yellville existed well before Arkansas became a state, though originally known as Shawneetown.

Marion County was formed in 1836, shortly after statehood. Shawneetown was then renamed Yellville. An old tale claims Archibald Yell offered $50 to do so, but never paid the money. True or not, Governor Yell's descendants heard the story and paid the overdue "bill" several years ago. Yell's name can be seen elsewhere in the state, including Yell County, Arkansas and Archibald Yell Boulevard in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Several biographies of him have been written, the most recent published by the University of Arkansas Press in Fayetteville.
