A number of potential students will begin by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Larkspur CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Larkspur CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Larkspur CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Larkspur CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

Larkspur CA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Larkspur CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Larkspur home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Larkspur CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Larkspur CA area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Larkspur CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Larkspur CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Larkspur healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Larkspur CA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Larkspur CA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
