Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Marked Tree AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Marked Tree AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Marked Tree AR ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Marked Tree AR hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

Marked Tree AR student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Marked Tree AR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Marked Tree home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

What to ask Marked Tree AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Marked Tree AR area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Marked Tree AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Marked Tree AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Marked Tree health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Marked Tree AR residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Marked Tree AR area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
