Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Knights Landing CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Knights Landing CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Knights Landing CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Knights Landing CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

Knights Landing CA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Knights Landing CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Knights Landing home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Knights Landing CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Knights Landing CA area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Knights Landing CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Knights Landing CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Knights Landing health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Knights Landing CA home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Knights Landing CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
