Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Fayetteville AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Fayetteville AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Fayetteville AR ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize through Fayetteville AR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Arkansas or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

Fayetteville AR student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Fayetteville AR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Fayetteville home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Fayetteville AR ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Fayetteville AR area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Fayetteville AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Fayetteville AR hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Fayetteville healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Fayetteville AR residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Fayetteville AR area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Fayetteville, Arkansas

Fayetteville is the third-largest city in Arkansas and county seat of Washington County. The city is centrally located within the county and has been home of the University of Arkansas since the institution's founding in 1871. Fayetteville is on the outskirts of the Boston Mountains, deep within the Ozarks. Known as Washington until 1829, the city was named after Fayetteville, Tennessee, from which many of the settlers had come. It was incorporated on November 3, 1836 and was rechartered in 1867. The four-county Northwest Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area is ranked 105th in terms of population in the United States with 463,204 in 2010 according to the United States Census Bureau. The city had a population of 73,580 at the 2010 Census.[7]

Fayetteville is home to the University of Arkansas, the state's largest university.[8] When classes are in session, thousands of students on campus dramatically change the city's demographics. Thousands of Arkansas Razorbacks alumni and fans travel to Fayetteville to attend football, basketball, and baseball games. The University's men's track and field program has won 41 national championships to date.[9][10][11] Fayetteville was named the third best place to live in the United States in the 2016 U.S. News Best Places To Live Rankings,[12] and one of the best places to retire in the South.[13][14][15]Forbes also ranked Fayetteville as the 24th-best city for business and careers in 2016.[16] Lonely Planet named Fayetteville among its top 20 places to visit in the South in 2016.[17] The city hosts the Walmart Shareholders Meetings each year at the Bud Walton Arena.

In 1828, George McGarrah settled at Big Spring with his family on the modern day corner of Spring and Willow, founding the town of Washington, and starting work on the courthouse. On October 17, Washington County was established, Washington chosen as the county seat. The Washington Courthouse was finished in 1829, and also contained the post office. Later in the year Postmaster Larkin Newton changed the name to the Fayetteville Courthouse, to avoid confusing with Washington, Hempstead County.[18][19] Two councilmen selected to name the city were from Fayetteville, Tennessee, which was itself named for Fayetteville, North Carolina (where some of its earliest residents had lived before moving to Tennessee). That original Fayetteville was named for General Lafayette, a French general who helped the colonies gain independence in the American Revolutionary War.
