Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Alviso CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Alviso CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Alviso CA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Alviso CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

Alviso CA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Alviso CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Alviso home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Alviso CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Alviso CA area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Alviso CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Alviso CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Alviso health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Alviso CA residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Alviso CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
