Arcadia CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Arcadia CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure

Arcadia CA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Arcadia CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

Arcadia CA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Arcadia CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Arcadia home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Arcadia CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Arcadia CA area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Arcadia CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Arcadia CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Arcadia medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Arcadia CA home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Arcadia CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
