Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Corcoran CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Corcoran CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Corcoran CA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Corcoran CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

Corcoran CA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Corcoran CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Corcoran home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every sonography program you are looking at, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

What to ask Corcoran CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Corcoran CA area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Corcoran CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Corcoran CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Corcoran healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Corcoran CA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Corcoran CA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
