Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Elverta CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Elverta CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Elverta CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Elverta CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

Elverta CA student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Elverta CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Elverta home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography school you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Elverta CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Elverta CA area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Elverta CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Elverta CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Elverta medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Elverta CA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Elverta CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
