Sonographer Job Description

Galt CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Galt CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Galt CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Galt CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

Galt CA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Galt CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Galt home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Galt CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Galt CA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Galt CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have associations with Galt CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Galt healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Galt CA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Galt CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
