Sonographer Occupation Summary

Lake Hughes CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Lake Hughes CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Lake Hughes CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Lake Hughes CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

Lake Hughes CA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Lake Hughes CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Lake Hughes home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Lake Hughes CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Lake Hughes CA area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Lake Hughes CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Lake Hughes CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Lake Hughes healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Lake Hughes CA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Lake Hughes CA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Lake Hughes, California

Lake Hughes is an unincorporated community in the foothills of the Sierra Pelona Mountains, northwest of Palmdale and north of the Santa Clarita Valley, in the Angeles National Forest. It is on the sag pond waters of Lake Hughes and Elizabeth Lake. The community is rural in character, with a population of 649 in 2010, but also has a strong recreational element centered on the three lakes in the vicinity. The community of Elizabeth Lake is located just east of Lake Hughes, sharing the same ZIP code.

Nearby Elizabeth Lake, known then as La Laguna de Chico Lopez, was a watering locale on Spanish colonial and Mexican El Camino Viejo in Alta California and the Gold Rush era Stockton – Los Angeles Road. From 1858 to 1861, Lake Hughes was on the route of the Butterfield Overland Mail, between the Widow Smith's Station and Mud Spring stage stops. The lake area was to the west of Rancho La Liebre, an 1846 Mexican land grant now part of Tejon Ranch.

Lake Hughes was named for Judge Griffith (Patrick) Hughes, who homesteaded the area around the turn of the 20th century.[3] Settlers were drawn to the area because water was more plentiful than in the drier Antelope Valley.
