Laton CA ultrasound technician testing patientNow that you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Laton CA, the next step is to start the process of picking a school. First, you need to find the right program that will furnish the necessary instruction to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do require that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each program so that you can evaluate and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one begin? A number of prospective students will start by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost should be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and additional qualifications will be discussed more in depth later in this article. But first, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are available.

Sonographer Occupation Summary

Laton CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Laton CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Laton CA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Laton CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

Laton CA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Laton CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Laton home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Laton CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Laton CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Laton CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with Laton CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Laton medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Laton CA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Laton CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
