Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Mentone CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Mentone CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Mentone CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Mentone CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

Mentone CA student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Mentone CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Mentone home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Mentone CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Mentone CA area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Mentone CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Mentone CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Mentone healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Mentone CA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Mentone CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
