Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Salinas CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Salinas CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Salinas CA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Salinas CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

Salinas CA student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Salinas CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Salinas home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

What to ask Salinas CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Salinas CA area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Salinas CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Salinas CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Salinas medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Salinas CA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Salinas CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Salinas, California

Salinas /səˈliːnəs/ is the county seat and largest municipality of Monterey County, California. Salinas is an urban area located just outside the southern portion of the Greater Bay Area and 10 miles (16 km) east-southeast of the mouth of the Salinas River.[11] The population was 157,218 as of 2016[update].[9] The city is located at the mouth of the Salinas Valley roughly eight miles from the Pacific Ocean and has a climate more influenced by the ocean than the hot-summer interior. The majority of residents live in single-unit detached homes, built between 1950 and 2000, while one third of the housing stock has three or more units per structure.[12] Salinas serves as the main business, governmental and industrial center of the region.[13] The marine climate is ideal for the floral industry, grape vineyards, and vegetable growers. Salinas is known for its vibrant and large agriculture industry and being "The Salad Bowl of the World" as the hometown of writer and Nobel Prize in Literature laureate John Steinbeck, who based several of his novels there.

The land currently occupied by the city of Salinas is thought to have been settled by Native Americans known as the Esselen prior to 200 AD.[14] Between 200 and 500 AD, they were displaced by the Rumsen group of Ohlone speaking people. The Rumsen-Ohlone remained as the inhabitants of the area for approximately another 1,200 years, and in the 1700s, were the group of native inhabitants contacted and recorded by the first Spanish explorers of the Salinas area.

Upon the arrival of the Spanish, large Spanish land grants were initially issued for the Catholic Missions and also as bonuses to soldiers. Later on after Mexican independence, smaller land grants continued to be issued for ranchos where mostly cattle were grazed. One of the many land grants was the Rancho Las Salinas land grant, part of which included the area of modern-day Salinas. As a result of the many new cattle ranches, a thriving trade eventually developed in cattle hide shipments, shipping primarily out of the Port of Monterey.[15]
