Sonographer Work Summary

Thousand Palms CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Thousand Palms CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Thousand Palms CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Thousand Palms CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

Thousand Palms CA student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Thousand Palms CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Thousand Palms home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Thousand Palms CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Thousand Palms CA area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Thousand Palms CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Thousand Palms CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Thousand Palms medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Thousand Palms CA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Thousand Palms CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
