Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Rye NH ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Rye NH hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Rye NH ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Rye NH clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in New Hampshire or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

Rye NH student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Rye NH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Rye home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Rye NH ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Rye NH area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Rye NH health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Rye NH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Rye healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Hampshire healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Rye NH residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Rye NH area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Rye, New Hampshire

The first settlement in New Hampshire, originally named Pannaway Plantation, was established in 1623 at Odiorne's Point[2] by a group of fishermen led by David Thompson. The settlement was abandoned in favor of Strawbery Banke which became Portsmouth. The first settler in present-day Rye was probably William Berry.[3] Prior to its incorporation in 1726 as a parish of New Castle, Rye was called "Sandy Beach" and its lands were once parts of New Castle, Portsmouth, Greenland and Hampton.[4] In 1726, the town of New Castle set off a Parish for Sandy Beach called "Rye", for Rye in Sussex, England, the ancestral lands of the Jenness family who continue to live in the town to this day and even have a beach named after them. The town was actually incorporated in 1785 from New Castle though the town seal mistakenly has it set as 1726. [5] Later on in the year, the seal was updated to include the three dates important to Rye, 1623, 1726 and 1785.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.7 square miles (95.1 km2), of which 12.6 square miles (32.6 km2) is land and 24.1 square miles (62.4 km2) is water, comprising 65.65% of the town.[6] The town is located on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean and includes four of the nine islands known as the Isles of Shoals, which lie approximately 10 miles (16 km) out from the mainland. The highest point in Rye is the summit of Breakfast Hill, at 151 feet (46 m) above sea level, on the town's border with Greenland.

State parks in Rye along the Atlantic shoreline include (from south to north) Jenness State Beach, Rye Harbor State Park, Wallis Sands State Beach, and 135-acre (55 ha) Odiorne Point State Park, home to the Seacoast Science Center.
